Hello, my name is Chris Seagraves, I'm a Boan-in-law, or outlaw, depends who you talk to. Thanks for your interest in a high quality, professional, HVAC installation by Boan Heating & Cooling. We guarantee complete satisfaction from beginning to end. Below are explanations of the choices in equipment. Please take the time to understand them. The decision on a furnace should be made relative to comfort, the decision on an A/C is to be made on efficiency, the decision on a dealer and manufacturer should be made on warranty, stock levels, training, and especially customer service. There are a lot of good, sales professionals out there. We recommend and encourage second opinions. It's important to know what you're getting, but also, know what's not being offered. Please don't hesitate to call or email me for more explanations, suggestions and comments.
Furnaces, 3 types, 2 levels of efficiency, don’t sacrifice comfort for efficiency.
Single Stage furnaces operate at full capacity every time the thermostat calls for heat consequently the furnace doesn't run long enough to heat the downstairs or the perimeter of the house unless you increase the demand on the thermostat.
Two Stage Furnaces operate at less capacity when there’s a low demand and full capacity for high demand regardless of temperature outside. If you use less capacity, the furnace will run longer, making the house more evenly heated. If you have a high demand on the thermostat it will jump into second stage and give you full capacity.
Two Stage Furnaces with a variable speed blower motor still operate with two stages of heating, however, during the Summer when the air conditioner come on, the blower motor won't go into full speed immediately. The blower motor will gradually accelerate which allows for more dehumidification and cooler supply temperatures. If you have a high demand, and the unit doesn't satisfy the thermostat, the blower motor goes into full capacity and gives you all the airflow the ductwork can hold.
Standard efficiency furnace vs. high efficiency furnace
Don't sacrifice comfort for "efficiency". If a new standard efficiency furnace was going to cost you $200 a month to operate during Nov, Dec, Jan, and Feb., and the difference in price between the standard efficiency furnace and the high efficiency furnace was $1000, it would take you 50 of those $200 months to recover the investment on a 10% more efficient furnace. That would be over 10 yrs. If the new furnace was only going to cost you $100, it would take over 20 yrs.
Air Conditioners or Heat Pumps (different efficiencies, same comfort levels)
The minimum SEER, Season Energy Efficiency Rating, is 13. In 1985, the minimum was 10. The government is making you buy a more efficient outdoor unit. We don't know how much money you'll save when going from a 13 to a 14 SEER unit, all we know is that is costs about 5% less to operate. SEER ratings are like MPG ratings. Two automobiles might both go 60 mph, however one is going to get better gas mileage, because of the way it's built, same with cooling. All the units are going to cool the same, however the more surface area that is available and the higher the heat transfer rate on the outdoor coil, the higher the SEER rating.
Heat Pump vs. Air Conditioner
The outdoor unit is designed to transfer heat, that's why, in the Summer, you feel warm air above the air conditioner. It's pulling heat from the indoor coil through the refrigeration lines. The return air is about 75-80 degrees, so the discharge you're feeling outside is about 100 degrees or so. The Heat Pump does the same thing the Air Conditioner does however it has the ability to do it in the winter also. If you have a heat pump, and the thermostat is set to "heat" the outdoor unit will run backwards, pulling heat from the outdoors, sending it inside, and your warm air discharge is now above the indoor coil, above the furnace.
Lennox or American Standard
In this industry the customer and people like me, the dealer, get what we pay for. We've been using two premium brands for almost 30 years now. This way our customers still have a choice, but they are choosing between two top shelf brands. Our customer's comfort is really important, almost as important as the continued success of our business. The parts, equipment, customer service, and tech support are more important than the price.
